Yes, yes, yes. If animal "welfare" organizations wanted to help animals they could. They are more interested in perpetuating their own existence, something their donors don't seem to appreciate. I am thankful you were able to help her. Our dog, Snake, was a coydog rescued with the help of a Lassen County game warden many years ago and she was a beloved member of our family. I've always had a soft spot for coyotes as they remind me of our girl. Coyotes are considered in invasive species where I live and it is legal to hunt them year round. When we hear them singing on a parcel near ours at night, I wish them well and hope they are smart enough to stay away from people. It is also illegal to help wildlife here and yet there is no help to be found from any organization focused on helping wildlife - no where to turn. People knowingly break the law hoping they can actually help an animal - like your visitor. We owe them better.

Illegal to help wildlife? Madness.

Agreed. A bill was introduced last session called the Alabama Good Samaritan Wildlife Rehabilitation Act but it failed to make it out of committee and I'm told some of the language was problematic. It is still illegal to provide assistance to wild animals even on your own land unless you have a permit from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Before I knew what a coyote was, I painted (badly) a watercolor of a trio of dogs from a photo and later realized they were coyotes. I've always thought them to be every bit as beautiful as any other animal. There's something magical about their independence. This 'native' designation is nothing more than licence to justify cruel and uncaring behavior, pulled out for convenience. I live in Florida and recently listened to a man who runs a pet food store describe how he gleefully bashes 'invasive' iguanas to death, feeling justified and entitled.

Yes, how often have I needed help to save animal, only to be left figuring out how to do it myself!

Even the most progressive shelter does not help on some things and you can not talk to them about those issues either, and now there is an open house to see how great they are. Well, I would appreciate accomodation for my disability as a virtual tour. I am going to suggest it.

I recently made a donation and it was not acknowledged.

Dear Nathan, President and Melania Trump today signed an Executive Order to help the Foster Care System. It is time that such a program be signed and implemented on behalf of our voiceless animals. I am heartbroken at the failure of our educational system to humanely address this problem. That is why part of my mission is to create Animal-Study Schools where children can interact with animals to experience their unconditional love and ultimately learn how to show Compassion to others. My hope is that such constructive changes to our educational system will begin to change the mentality of people and ultimately make our future society more loving and caring so that the ignorance and closed mindedness of those overseeing today’s animal shelters will change dramatically for the better. Natha, please continue to be our Ambassador for Compassion and Animal Rights.🙏❤️🐶😸🐿️🐤🐇🐓🐷🐂🐴🐟

Nathan -- I love it -- you're right, it does not take that much -- a little research and patience and, of course, the WILL to do -- this article is filled with useful info -- thank you much -- we need more to replicate your heart and mind and help our Animals -- it makes such a difference.

Welcome to Oakland. If you have not read this piece, you should: https://news.nathanwinograd.org/p/what-must-be-done-shall-be-done. It will help elucidate the depths of Oakland's dysfunction — not just animal control, but also the police and fire departments. When it comes to rescue, we are literally on our own here.

But if you want to do the most good, it is cats living on the street who need spaying/neutering and other care. Oakland gets an F grade here, too. Just go on Nextdoor and you'll see how dire the need is.

Thank you. I appreciate your reply. I will read your article. When I moved from Berkeley I was aware that Oakland had problems but not to the degree that exists. What a mess. I’ve learned the past two years that spay/neuter and other animal welfare services are not available in a number of California communities to the extent they were after the Hayden Act came into effect but regressive animal shelter policies do not help. Thanks again.

One of my favorite books is “God’s Dog” by Hope Ryden. Also, I’ve good things about Project Coyote. I have had 2 coyote/dog mixes being around so many canyons in San Diego. One appeared to be a husky coyote mix, best dog I’ve ever had with children. She memorized their houses and wanted to go visit them all.

Amidst all the anti wildlife advocates hunting predators into extinction for sport in the United States, one beam of light shines through. Predator Defense, an independent national organization directed by Brooks Fahey in Oregon is a staunch non profit predator protection organization focused upon ending deliberate harm to predators, and calling for co-existence. For the last 2 decades at least Brooks has been tireless in his advocacy, persevering through discouragement after discouragement. He ended coyote hunting contests in Oregon and has continued onto other wildlife protection campaigns nationally. Being a missionary for animals is hard work. Brooks has never quit through wind, rain and stormy weather. When I am discouraged I remember no one ever promised a Rose Garden ( including the US president) and if others find a way to continue through all odds, then I must too. Brooks is one example of that sort of courage.

Laughter is the only response to government agencies always tying their hands up with “rules” that prevent initiative: Leave an injured animal right there, observe, and do nothing. I think it was WC Fields who said those who can do; those who can’t work for the government. But Nathan and others who care follow a different rule and saving a coyote’s life is one stellar example. Follow the unknown path even if success is not guaranteed. I don’t recall the author of the quote below,

“Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's looking at impossible odds and saying, ‘I don't care’…"

It’s who you are, and about going down that unknown road with an uncertain outcome. Walk down that road anyway. At the end of the road at the very least you will learn something, gain company, have more resources and be accompanied by good cheer along the way,
