The Miranda’s Rescue scandal is not an isolated incident. Scandals at other organizations show the problem is systemic and that animal welfare is plagued by betrayal
Another disreputable shelter practice to legitimize killing healthy animals is intentionally mislabeling them “unhealthy and untreatable” when by every standard they are not. That is a local Multnomah county practice where the pound is never made to justify euthanasia practices. The only avenue I know to uncover and expose those practices is through ordering and paying for public records often made deliberately expensive. And then publish and share those records everywhere. None of those efforts takes away the sorrow of it.
I wish I had the answer, as there are so many of them. Background checks would be a good start but shelters don't seem to care about potential employees' backgrounds and always hire the worst of the worst. The better answer is to completely overhaul the shelter system, get rid of the fat money executive/administrative positions, get more reputable rescues involved in running them, with other people who have knowledge of animal care. Also figuring out some sort of oversight system to prevent the appalling conditions and treatment of shelter animals. Public exposure of deplorable shelter conditions and shelter directors behavior ( like a 60 Minutes documentary).
A shelter should care for and protect animals, not neglect and execute them.
I agree there should be an oversight board for all shelters and rescues, but unless you get the most morally sturdy people on it, the door just opens for another level of corruption.
Dear Nathan, It is an absolutely egregious and shameful situation that these hypocritical and inhumane leaders of such organization as Miranda’s Rescue, PETA, Best Friends. and ASPCA are not prosecuted for murder of Sentient Beings/Animals who are entitled to the same rights and compassion as Human Beings. Our legal and judicial system should be held accountable for not doing anything about these travesties. Which branch of our government is responsible for overseeing these matters of Animal Rights? Is it the Department of the Interior? Someone or several people in the current Trump administration should be held accountable and be required to step up and take strong action to get positive and constructive RESULTS to save the lives of our beloved and voiceless dogs and other animals. In memory of Maya and the many other dogs who were cruelly abused and killed , it is time to take action. It would also help if we encourage the leaders of our educational system to develop Animal Study Programs and Schools where children can learn compassion and kindness and love by interacting with dogs and cats and other animals. This would bode well for our current and future generations. EACH AND EVERY LIFE MATTERS. ❤️🐶😸🙏
Since so few people actually read anymore, these appalling incidents and this overall acceptance of animal cruelty should be presented on film as a documentary. Right in peoples' faces so they can't ignore it. I wonder why 60 Minutes or one of the other news outlets hasn't jumped on this already.
The San Francisco Chronicle has been doing a good job of keeping the spotlight on Miranda's Rescue, but no one is doing the same for PETA and Best Friends.

There was a sweet old German Shepherd on tv today needing a home, so I called a relative to take a quick look.
It takes a lot of dedication to rehome dogs well.
The shelter is doing very well at helping the animals and people in their community.
There seem to be bad apples in every profession.
But thanks for keeping us aware of the failures and what needs to happen to change it.
But sending all those dogs to their death means some basic checks of that rescue weren't being done.
