Dear Nathan, If is sad and frustrating that those responsible for the cruel killing of sweet dog Chai have still not been punished as of now, two years since the incident. You point out the legal details through your brilliant legal mind. In my opinion, as l have mentioned many times in the past, the fact that dogs and other animals are Sentient Beings who deserve to be treated with the same respect as Human Beings, should serve as the legal reason why the Columbus, Georgia culprits should be punished as if they had killed a Human Being. Hopefully justice and logic will ultimately prevail.❤️🐶

As hard as this article is to read, it must have been even harder to write. Witnessing suffering is the ultimate compassionate act. Perseverance, patience, resolve, and faith will remedy hearts looking for justice and minds looking for peace. Chai is no longer on this Earth that is ever so brutal to homeless animals, but her legacy transformed a brutal system into a more compassionate one and highlighted the capability that humans have when given broad discretion to do their worst. It also highlighted what people will do when they're at their best.

Thank you for writing it, I remember this story when you first brought it to light. So grateful that PAWS took over, and hopefully the brutal thugs who killed her in such an inhumane and heartless manner will suffer the consequences.

Namaste,

Not only was DOG Chai's fate cruel, depraved and immoral, it was ILLEGAL -- What kind of people DO this ... ?

Thank you for bringing national attention to Chai's life and death while at Columbus Animal Care & Control and for memorializing her two years later with this thoughtful and touching update. Had Columbus Animal Allies not obtained the video footage, her suffering and death would have silently slipped into the past while others continued to be subjected to the same fate. The public outrage that followed viewing the horrific ending of her life, however, was the tipping point for Columbus leadership to take actions that were justified years before - and now while sheltering has improved since services and enforcement have been contracted out, the work that continues is urging the community to develop and support both short- and long-term solutions to address the ongoing capacity crisis. While working with Columbus Animal Allies, I found that other shelter reform advocacy groups facing the same issues of mismanagement, retaliation, corruption, and refusal of accountability could benefit from connecting and sharing ideas and experiences, so I started The Shelter Reform Network to help bring us together. What was learned in the pursuit of justice for Chai is now serving to help others - a bittersweet legacy for a dog who should still be alive today.
