A federal jury awarded nearly $4 million against two men who brokered puppy-milled dogs in violation of California’s pet store sales ban by falsely claiming they were rescued puppies. The lawsuit has driven the men out of the state and resulted in the closure of pet stores that illegally sold the puppies.

In other news: Communities are looking for people to run their animal shelters. Governor Noem wants President Biden’s dog dead. A bipartisan group of lawmakers launch “the Congressional Dog Lovers Caucus.” A Democratic senator partners with a Republican governor to defend farm animal abuse. Another week, another pet-related recall. A pet-friendly homeless shelter opens in New York. A sheriff’s deputy is reassigned after surrendering a retired police dog to a county pound. The CDC announces new rules for importing dogs from other countries. An animal self-medicates in the wild. The search for the perfect plant-based hot dog is over. Animal researchers harm both animals and people.

These are some of the stories making headlines in animal protection:

Do you have what it takes to save lives?

Amber, at Suffolk Humane Society.

The following communities are looking for someone to run their animal shelters:

  • Chicago, IL.

  • Hartsville, SC.

  • Ridgely, MD.

  • Suffolk, VA.

  • Tacoma, WA.

The successful candidates with a “can do” attitude, a passion for saving lives, and a commitment to getting results will have the community’s support.
