These are some of the stories making headlines in animal protection:
Alleged animal abuser indicted for wolf torture
In 2024, the Wyoming Attorney General issued a statement that a man would not face animal cruelty charges for allegedly running over a wolf with his snowmobile, disabling the animal, parading him at a bar with his mouth duct-taped shut, then keeping him alive for days while he tormented and then killed the wolf. The AG claimed that cruelty laws do not apply to wild animals. It turns out that was not true.
Nearly 18 months later, a Wyoming grand jury indicted the alleged abuser on felony animal cruelty charges. Despite uncooperative witnesses and other challenges, a 12-member grand jury concluded there was sufficient evidence to indict him. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
Who we elect has consequences not only for us, but also for the animals living in our communities.
