When I went to Pima County "animal control" back in August of 2018, I was looking for a pet rabbit. In the entrance area was a big, old, blind Andalusian Shepard in a cage much too small for his size. A sign was on the cage stating "Hi, I am Jackson. I am blind. Please adopt me.". A young man came through and said "hi, Jackson!" but did not stop, as I had hoped he would. I left but kept thinking about blind Jackson. Weirdly, his picture was on my computer when I woke up. (still no explanation), but I believe in signs, so I went back to the pound to see about him. Staff told me he was too thin and sick to adopt, but that I could foster him. We drove back to our house in a raging storm. That blind boy sat with the window open despite the thunderous rain, smelling the Arizona monsoon. He won my heart that night and we never went back to the pound. He stayed by my side until he crossed May 13th, 2025. He left in my arms. I walked outside and I saw a single goose flying. My last words to him were "I won't leave you, old man". I stayed until he flew. Rest in Peace, sweet boy. I miss you so much.
You have touched my heart with your compassion and love for Jackson. Your story should be shared with everyone. This world needs more people like you and Nathan Winograd.
I’m so sorry for your loss, what a beautifully written tribute to him. We recently lost our dog of 13 years in January, and I started crying all over again while reading this as your description of the last days was strikingly similar to our experience. Rest in peace sweet Oswald 💔
I helped Frieda Freedom get into rescue. They named her, and I thought she was mostly Boston Terrier.
I took an oversized Boston out of a high kill shelter to rehome him and find him just the right home,
and a woman with 33 dogs in her home let me inside and wanted me to find a home for a little dog I identified as a Boston Terrier.
All these dogs were Bostons or mixes of Bostons and quite endearing, and I was able to help them because ai was showing up and doing what needed to be done, at least as I was able.
The credit card I was able to donate funds with turned out to be less important than a well maintained vehicle and a willingness to show up and put the time in where I was best able to be of service.
A beautiful tribute. I am rewatching a documentary about the Vietnam war. A man told his story about preparing to end his life, night after night. One night he was ready and his two dogs, whom he had let go outside, scratched on the door, asking to be let in.
He got up and let him in. He used words similar to Natan’s. They represented love and life to him in that moment. That shifted his thinking, perhaps state of being. He realized that if he wanted to end his life he could do it the next day. He put away his pistol and lived for many years; he was alive to tell his story on the documentary. He could possibly be alive today.
We’re fortunate to have these beacons of light in our lives
Dear Nathan, You and your compassion and love for Oswald is the story that needs to be shared with the world. Your legal wisdom and your sensitivity and dedication to saving the lives of animals has been an inspiration to all of us. I, as a sensitive human and a former educator ( School Principal, Professor, etc), am dedicated to my mission of Making This a Kinder and More Loving World. Your model of the No Kill Equation needs to be shared throughout the world. You are the Ambassador of Animal Compassion and Animal Welfare. Our mutual goal of continuously educating the children and their families and others and the politicians of the world about the urgent need for COMPASSION is critical in order to save our planet! All of this will be in loving honor and memory of Oswald and the wonderful dogs and cats and other animals that we have had. Let us not give up!!!❤️🐶😸🐰🐷🐓🐂🐴
Well done you, Oswald! Mission accomplished and more. You showed up right at the appointed time. You understood the assignment. You shepherded Nathan and his family through some very dark and painful transitions. You showed Nathan that down and almost out is sometimes just a learning curve. You sowed joy and hope and optimism everywhere the grass was slightly bare. You projected love and gratitude and a zest for living every time anyone looked into those beautiful, bulging, brown eyes of yours. You kept everyone connected and engaged and laughing and loving each other. And we are deeply thankful for your steadfast dedication to inspiring Nathan to see his purpose, his path, to the No Kill movement. Oswald, you helped save over 2,000,000 beautiful souls who came to know kindness and a loving home and feel cherished. You loved everyone who entered your orbit, Oswald, and they loved you right back. You stirred the goodness in humans and witnessed its power and transformation as you watched a multitude of other creatures, “having breath or soul” receive the love and compassion they needed by way of your host on this planet and his beloved family.
Oswald, you have earned your rest, and you crossed over with a heart filled with the love and memories that you shared with the Winograd constellation. You will always carry them in your heart and they will carry you in their hearts. When so many animals and people leave this world with nary a ripple in the Ethers because no one knows they are gone, you had a well-lived life, surrounded by enduring love and kindness.
You will continue to monitor things and drop in from time to time to honor that sacred bond and connection. These are your people, Oswald. And though you are out of sight and touch, you will never be out of reach. We salute you, Oswald. Adieu. Travel safe. The Earth and your little acre miss you already.
Oh, little Oswald!!! Godspeed and fly high. I remember the picture where he was one of the trio watching you with skepticism attempting to fix your dryer. May his memory be a blessing. Over time, the pain subsides in the heart little by little and is replaced with the fond memories.
Oswald’s big beautiful smile says it all — the epitome of joy — I detest when loved ones pass on & leave us — it’s the downside of life : this death thing : it just kills me — there are no words for the sadness and there is no remedy — I hope he visits you — Nathan, hang in there.

He was a soldier who had returned from the war, questioning everything and regretting a great deal.
