The terms “vicious” and “unsafe” used by animal control agencies are intentionally vague getaway efforts to justify unconscionable conduct. It is very disturbing. They fail to exactly define the behavior challenges in question. The behavior challenges are nearly all solvable through training and management. Pound people know that. It is about the vindictive drive to kill animals and not be challenged. These are people who find their way anywhere the vulnerable are. The real problem is the people who put them in charge and, then ignoring public concerns, opt to protect management not public service. It is a big fight in Multnomah County Oregon. Activists have had to become their own media.

If anyone has ways they use to ease the sorrow of witnessing deaths of shelter animals when all you can think of is what might have been, let me know. I try to write their stories so they become real, not just a number, protest every time, but writing to government about their cruelty doesn't affect them at all. I do it anyway. It is not enough.

Ventura County Animal Services is no longer no-kill during the first full year with new director Esteban Rodriguez. No-kill status means a 90% or higher live release rate; VCAS live release rate is 89%. Only 78% of cats made it out of the shelter alive. Many dogs were euthanized for “behavior”, many of which were healthy and sociable.

Santa Paula saved the life of a dog named Lladk, condemned to death by an Oregon County for a resolvable concern. Despite every obstacle put into place, Santa Paula persisted. They succeeded not only in saving Lladk's life but also the lives of those who cared and who had begun to feel hopeless.
