These are some of the stories making headlines in animal protection:
California bans cat declawing
The Governor signed legislation making California the largest state to ban the declawing of cats. AB 867 overwhelmingly passed the Assembly and Senate, marking the first time it has succeeded despite numerous previous attempts. This is good news.
Declawing cats causes long-term harm that extends far beyond the initial surgery. Declawed cats suffer from chronic pain, impaired mobility, and permanent nerve damage. And contrary to conventional dogma, studies also show that banning the practice does not lead to cat relinquishment as “owners are able to manage normal scratching behavior and retain cats in their homes without needing to resort to onychectomy [declawing].”
While many countries have already prohibited declawing, it remains legal in 44 of the 50 U.S. states despite its proven cruelty. This is primarily due to opposition from regressive, profit-driven veterinary associations.
