Both political extremes allow animal abuse to go unchecked

These are some of the stories making headlines in animal protection:
Danville, VA, pound continues to kill with impunity
The Lynchburg Humane Society is demanding answers from another Virginia pound, the Danville Area Humane Society, after a senior dog named Eve was killed in Danville. Eve was originally adopted from Lynchburg, but her adopted family surrendered her to Danville. Lynchburg Humane Society’s leadership said the dog’s microchip was registered to their organization, criticized Danville officials for failing to contact them before killing Eve, and said they would have taken her back immediately.
The story has generated widespread outrage from animal advocates and reignited criticism of the Danville pound’s rates of killing, which are among the highest in the state. In 2024, Danville killed nearly 70% of all dogs and over 70% of all cats. It also killed 45% of other animals, like rabbits. Its longtime director is a darling of the PETA pro-kill mindset.
