In other news: New encyclopedia of animal law. Celebrating a birthday. Pet Housing Act aims to keep families together. Another week, another case of tainted pet food. “Humane” milk is inhumane. Plant-based company tries to counter falling sales. The New York Times excuses neglect, abuse, abandonment, and killing.

These are some of the stories making headlines in animal protection:

New encyclopedia of animal law

The recently published Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law provides an expansive overview of the emerging field of animal law, everything from A to Z, or, in this case, Agriculture to Zoos.

According to the publisher’s press release, “The Elgar Concise Encyclopedia of Animal Law is a vital resource for students and scholars in animal studies, criminal law, and law and society, as well as lawyers and policymakers.”

Although I have not read any of the other chapters, the Encyclopedia contains contributions from over 100 animal lawyers, including yours truly, who authored the chapter on No Kill.

If interested, the publisher is currently offering 35% off with the code ANML35.

Celebrating a birthday

Cheers! This month, The No Kill Advocacy Center turns 21. And they are asking supporters to join in the celebration by sending just $21.

In many ways, we are still a young organization. But we have accomplished a lot. When we started, mass killing in shelters was the norm. Only one community saved healthy and treatable dogs, cats, community cats, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, and other shelter animals. It didn't matter if they were young, old, blind, or missing limbs. It didn’t matter if they were healthy, sick, injured, or traumatized. They were all guaranteed a home, and they all found one. Our director created the No Kill community, and we have successfully replicated its success in communities across the country.

The nationwide embrace of the No Kill Equation — our proven and revolutionary approach to lifesaving — is responsible for a 95% decline in U.S. killing from its high point. It has been called “the single biggest success of the modern animal protection movement.”
