Raw pet food diets threaten animals and people

A cat in San Francisco died after eating raw pet food. The cat suffered from complications of “H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza,” commonly known as bird flu. The Food & Drug Administration tested samples of RAWR raw pet food and found them to be contaminated with the same strain of H5N1 that resulted in the cat’s death.

Over the past year, the Food & Drug Administration has issued 11 pet food recalls — all of them involved raw food. Consumer Reports also “tested 58 dog foods from brands including Blue Buffalo, Hill’s Science Diet, and Purina for key nutrients and dangerous contaminants.” Not surprisingly, the only foods with concerning contaminants were the raw ones.
